Eloise at the Plaza

New York, Sunday the 25th of September, 2011 (Continued)

Staying at the Plaza was a dream come true. Ever since E found out about the Eloise Suite at the Plaza Hotel, she longed to go there. Not such a big reveal here, but E's name is Eloise. Although she was not named after the naughty little six year old girl who lives at the Plaza in Kay Thompson's famous books, she does own all the books, having received the first one from her grandfather when she was just a little girl.
When I first made inquiries about staying in the Suite, I asked if there was an age restriction. The reply from the official "Eloise ambassador" was "you are never too old to enjoy the Eloise Suite".
So we booked the suite and an adjoining "Edwardian Suite". The whole thing was an insanely expensive extravagance. My lips are sealed as to the total financial outlay except to say that this one night cost more than the entire previous nine days accommodation. It actually makes me feel a little ill now to think of the expense, but, as the saying goes, you only live once, and we will certainly never forget that once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Those suites had to be seen to be believed. The Eloise Suite was completely over the top but absolutely gorgeous. When E and Z arrived at the hotel from Florida a short time after C and I had checked into our rooms, there were actual squeals of excitement. I don't think any of us could believe our eyes.

All that pink! Zebra print carpet! Chandeliers everywhere! The deepest bath we had ever seen! Did I mention the pink! I loved the Eloise Suite, but I was glad I was sleeping in the Edwardian Suite which was so perfectly elegant with lovely muted colours.

We had an absolute ball. The girls put on the dress-ups, jumped on the bed and generally reverted to childhood. We ordered room service and wallowed in the luxury of it all. It was lovely pretending to be fabulously wealthy just for one night. We would be back to reality soon enough.

What a place! Hang the expense I say: you'll never forget the experience. (no-one but me knows how much we paid for that week in the apartment on the Seine near Notre-Dame. A good policy!)
